Questioning Hinduism

Hinduism - guide to divinity
The purpose of Hinduism is to teach mankind the art of self-realization. Many scriptures of Hinduism have deep teachings on this subject. These teachings are never imposed on anyone. Everyone is free to follow his own volition as far as spiritual matters are concerned. If Rama or anyone else eat or preferred meat, it was their choice. If social injunctions or mores are against meat eating or drinking, they are only as a guide to society. Nothing restricted the individual's freedom except his denying freedom to others. With the law of Karma in operation, everyone got their just desserts as a consequence of their actions. And Dharma (the law of social harmony), ensured that society was always protected from any source of evil. If worse came to worst, God himself has promised that he would decent to destroy the evil. Therefore eating meat or drinking liquor hardly mattered except as the bad example it may set. But Hindu society at large, due to the operation of the law of Karma and Dharma, had a sense of proportion and knew how to judge people. They judged Rama as Purushottam – meaning, the ideal man. So obviously they were not negatively influenced by Rama drinking or eating meat. Hinduism has been painted on a huge canvas. Mudslinging would hardly sully the magnificent legacy that Hinduism has to offer - teachings to take man to his divinity.
